Reserve Bank Board Meeting – Monetary Policy Decision 1 December 2020, 2.30 pm AEDT Monetary policy decisions are expressed in terms of a target for the cash rate. A media release is issued at 2.30 pm after each Reserve Bank Board meeting, with any change in the cash rate target taking effect the following day. (Prior to December 2007, media releases were issued only when the cash rate target was changed.) The RBA kept its cash rate unchanged at 1.5% in December, as expected. It flagged greater concern about some banks “having a reduced appetite to lend” for housing purposes. The last RBA board meeting for 2016 was held on Tuesday 6 December and rates were kept on hold at 1.5%. This decision is consistent with the statement on monetary policy issued by the RBA early last month, where they noted the economy continues to grow, albeit at a moderate pace. Business Macquarie’s view is that 2016 is likely to be a continuum of this cycle thematic, and expects the RBA will maintain its easing bias in 2016. However the direction of the Australian currency after the US raises interest rates in mid December, will determine a possible February 2016 rate cut.
